Process

I glue together two pieces of wood with a channel that fits the blade snugly and keeps it safe from harm and the elements. The core is smooth and thin, not much wider than the blade it's housing, and it complements the geometry of the blade.
The edges of the scabbard are sanded and rounded; it feels comfortable in your hand when you grip it. You don't want a thick, blocky scabbard: it adds extra weight, it's awkward to carry, and it's ugly. |
Next, I wrap the scabbard in leather. This is a time-consuming process. First, I soak the leather in water to make it pliable. I apply wood glue to the core to adhere the leather.
As I wrap the leather around the scabbard, I give extra attention to the risers. The risers must be pressed into the leather for good definition and adherence. Once I finish this process, the leather is dyed and sealed. |
